Dropped EU restaurant ban on olive oil in jugs:
"A last minute exit from the road to nonsense!”
says the European hospitality industry with relief
Brussels, 23 May 2013 – HOTREC, the business association representing the European hospitality
industry, expressed today its relief following the European Commission’s
announcement that a plan to ban the use of refillable olive oil jugs was
withdrawn and criticised the lack of prior-consultation of the sector on the
hospitality industry welcomes the Commission decision to withdraw the
controversial plan to ban the use in hotels and restaurants of re-fillable
containers for olive oil offered to the customers, as it considers that it
would have meant extra-costs and extra-waste for the industry while bringing no
real protection to the consumer. "The
hospitality industry is currently one of the few industries that still creates
jobs in many parts of Europe despite the economic crisis. We are therefore more
than relieved by the withdrawal of a plan that could only have burdened further
our industry” explains Kent Nyström, the President of HOTREC.
hospitality industry was also astonished by the lack of prior-consultation of
the sector before the adoption of the now withdrawn EU plan. "This plan came as a total surprise since we
were not even consulted by the European Commission. This is not acceptable and
we clearly expect in the future to be invited to discuss beforehand any plan
directly affecting the way restaurateurs run their businesses” further
added Mr Nyström.
