The European Hospitality industry employs around 9 million workers. Therefore, EU measures relating to social affairs are important areas of interest for the industry.
Over the years the EU has adopted a large number of legislative measures in the area of social policy. The most important ones fall under the headings of:
- organisation of work;
- consultation and information of workers;
- health and safety of workers;
- equal treatment in the workplace; and
- work life balance.
Social dialogue
Since many years, HOTREC is engaged in a sectoral social dialogue at EU level with its trade union counterpart - EFFAT.
EFFAT and HOTREC have worked on a number of issues of common interest, including:
- corporate social responsibility;
- the impact of reduced VAT on employment; and
- trends in the hospitality industry.
EFFAT and HOTREC are currently working in the development of a European Qualification and Skills Passport for the Hospitality sector.
As recognised social partner, HOTREC is also consulted by the European Commission, pursuant to article 138 of the Treaty, before the Commission makes proposals in the social policy field.
