Newsletter Tourism

Dear readers,

C’est la rentrée. Welcome back to Brussels after the summer break. It has already been an eventful month in EU politics.

Ursula von der Leyen named her team of Commissioners, and Apostolos Tzitzikostas is the candidate for Sustainable Transport and Tourism. This is a landmark nomination, as tourism is recognised as a vital sector for the EU and now has its own portfolio within the European Commission.

“Hit the ground running from day one to create a resilient and competitive tourism sector.” Strong words of encouragement from the Commission President. HOTREC is looking forward to working closely with the new Commissioner and supporting the EU’s goals for a sustainable and prosperous tourism sector.

Reflecting on the summer season with our members, the top 3 challenges faced by the industry remain labour shortages and skill gaps, the increase in energy and food prices, and extreme weather conditions. In mid-October, we will be hosting our General Assembly in Warsaw. This will be an important moment to discuss best ways forward to address these pressing issues.

This newsletter will cover key EU policies impacting tourism and hospitality, and an insightful interview with MEP Eliza Vozemberg, Chair of the Transport and Tourism Committee at the European Parliament.

We at HOTREC wish you all the best for the busy times ahead. Enjoy!
