EU Visa Strategy to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness
The European tourism sector has welcomed the publication of the EU Visa Strategy, recognising visa policy as a critical instrument to strengthen Europe’s global competitiveness and attractiveness as a destination.
On behalf of the Tourism Manifesto Alliance, representing more than 70 European tourism and travel organisations, HOTREC supports a modern, accessible and traveller-friendly visa framework that facilitates legitimate travel while maintaining high standards of security.
The tourism sector underlines the importance of:
-
fully digital and efficient visa procedures,
-
faster and more predictable processing,
-
longer-validity multiple-entry visas, and
-
harmonised implementation across Member States that delivers a smooth experience for travellers.
With the Schengen Area remaining the world’s most visited destination, Europe’s continued leadership depends on providing a seamless travel experience from the visa application stage through to border crossing. In a highly competitive global market, complex and slow procedures risk undermining Europe’s appeal for leisure and business travellers alike.
A modern and accessible visa framework is essential to maintain Europe’s competitiveness and to support jobs and growth across the tourism ecosystem. With the roll-out of ETIAS expected in late 2026, Member States must ensure timely system readiness and sufficient resources to deliver an efficient and reliable welcome.
By prioritising facilitation and digitalisation, the EU Visa Strategy can reinforce Europe’s position as the world’s leading destination while supporting year-round tourism and economic resilience across regions.
