Shaping the Future of Sustainable Hospitality: PEFCR Consultation
The development of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for hotel accommodation services is entering its final stage, and the second public consultation is now open.
Following extensive stakeholder input during the first consultation, the revised draft PEFCR presents an updated, more refined methodology to assess the environmental performance of hotel accommodation across Europe. This next phase is critical to ensure that the framework is both scientifically robust and operationally feasible for the hospitality sector.
Why this matters for hospitality
The PEFCR will play a key role in defining how sustainability is measured and communicated in the accommodation sector. It has direct implications for:
- Data collection and reporting requirements for businesses
- The feasibility of environmental performance indicators
- How sustainability information is communicated to consumers and policymakers
For a sector composed predominantly of SMEs, it is essential that the final framework remains practical, proportionate, and aligned with operational realities.
Call for input: tailored participation
HOTREC encourages all members and stakeholders to actively contribute to the consultation. Your input is essential to ensure that the final PEFCR framework supports a competitive, sustainable, and SME-friendly hospitality sector across Europe.
