EU Platform of Food Loss and Food Waste – 5 years activity report
Today, Friday 17 of December 2021, the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission published the Food Losses and Waste Platform’s activity report, EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste Activity report - first mandate (2016-2021). This report looks at the main achievements of the expert group and the initiatives taken by its members across the food supply chain.
The Platform aims to accelerate the EU’s progress towards Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3 and maximise the contribution of all actors, bringing together public entities and actors in the food value chain, including consumer and other non-governmental organisations. It aims to support all actors in defining measures needed to prevent food waste; sharing best practices; and evaluating progress made over time.
HOTREC co-drafted the chapter focusing on food services/hospitality, providing the following recommendations to achieve the Platform´s targets:
- Further financial support and information about these for SMEs
- Raising awareness on the issue via best practice sharing, case studies, commitments, and public-private partnership
- Public support for SMEs to measure and monitor food waste
- Consumer awareness actions to promote conscious behaviour
- Food donation when possible, as redistributing small perishable amounts may be challeging from a food safety perspective
