The CEN (European Committee for standardisation) has been requested by the European Commission to develop a “European standardisation deliverable for COVID-19 health and safety protocols for tourism establishments and services”.

HOTREC wishes to consult Members to gather initial views on whether an additional standardisation initiative via CEN would be desirable for the European hospitality market, and what type of option, if any, would be preferrable. Your views would be most welcome by 10 February 2021.

The options under consideration by CEN are:

  1. the development of a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA), based on existing national specifications;
  2. the adoption of the ISO PAS 5643 (once published by ISO) as a European deliverable;
  3. Any other more suitable options.

Memo outlining the issue, the expected process, our initial assessment and some background information:

  • the letter sent by the European Commission to CEN:
  • The latest draft of the guidelines ISO PAS 5643 on "Measures to reduce the spread of the Covid -19 in the tourism industry" currently under development by ISO/TC 228/WG18 and on which HOTREC is gathering comments from Members. The ISO guidelines could be a direct source of inspiration for the CEN’s deliverable.
